Intro to Pattern Making | Skirts

Ready to take your sewing skills to the next level? If you’ve been sewing with commercial patterns and are ready to learn how patterns are created, this class is the perfect next step.

In this four-session course, you’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of flat patternmaking by drafting a custom skirt pattern using your own body measurements. This foundational pattern, commonly called a sloper or block, is a basic fitted pattern that can be used as the starting point for creating your own skirt designs.

Students will learn how to take accurate measurements, translate those measurements into a flat pattern, and test the fit of their pattern in muslin. By the end of the course, you’ll have a personalized skirt sloper that can be used as a foundation for future patternmaking and design projects.

In This Class, You Will Learn:

  • How to take accurate body measurements for patternmaking

  • How to draft a custom skirt pattern using your own measurements

  • Essential patternmaking terminology, tools, and techniques

  • How darts, waist shaping, ease, and seam allowances work within a pattern

  • How to sew a muslin to evaluate the fit of your pattern

  • How to make basic fit adjustments to your draft

  • How a sloper can be used as the foundation for future pattern designs

What You Will Leave Class With:

  • A custom skirt sloper drafted from your own measurements

  • A tested muslin of your skirt pattern

  • A foundational understanding of flat patternmaking that you can build on in future classes and projects

Disclaimers:

* This class is designed for age 16+
* Cancellation Notice: We kindly ask that makers give a minimum 1 week notice of cancellation for class credit/reschedule and a 2 week cancellation notice for full refund. This advance notice will allow us to make any necessary adjustments to our schedule and accommodate other makers.

Refunds: Class cancellations made with a 2 week notice or more will either receive a full refund on a gift card, or a full refund minus the $5 card processing fee to the card that was used to purchase the class registration. This fee accounts for the costs associated with the transaction and ensures a smooth and secure refund process. Multi-week courses fill more slowly and a 72 hour notice (current single class policy) is not enough time to fill an empty spot.

Skill Level: Advanced
Skill Details: Open to sewists that can independently sew beginner projects or intermediate projects with some assistance. When taking an advanced garment class it’s helpful if you have experience with button bands, ruffles, and collars.
